The wide flat rim of this piece is a departure in form from the other pieces in this year's collection. Carved concentric lines lead to the vase's opening while vertical lines accentuate the nuanced form of the body. The piece is decorated with white slip resulting in a rustic texture that we've come to love about Akio's pieces. The shinogi—a traditional Japanese decorative technique—are carved carefully by hand into the surface of the piece. After bisque firing Akio applies colored slips and then glazes the pieces with translucent matte glaze. Beautiful to see and incredible to hold.
